More than 60 worshippers were reportedly abducted from the Central Mosque in Dekara town, Borgu Local Government Area of Niger State, after terrorists stormed the mosque during Friday’s Jumu’at prayer. The attack has sparked fresh concerns over the growing insecurity in parts of the state, with residents describing the incident as one of several attacks recorded in the area.
According to reports, the attackers arrived at the mosque in large numbers while worshippers were observing the Friday prayer. They reportedly opened fire sporadically before gathering some of the worshippers and forcing them out of the mosque towards a nearby forest. No injuries or deaths were immediately reported.
A resident who spoke on condition of anonymity said the attack was part of a wider wave of violence recorded across Borgu Local Government Area on Friday. According to the resident, terrorists also attacked three communities, including Dekara, before targeting the Central Mosque. The source claimed that more than 60 people were taken away during the mosque attack.
The incident has left residents deeply concerned, particularly because the attack occurred at a place of worship during one of the most important weekly Muslim prayers. The reported abduction also highlights the vulnerability of communities in areas where armed groups continue to carry out attacks and kidnappings.
When contacted, the Niger State Police Command spokesperson, SP Wasiu Abiodun, said he would verify the information and provide an update. However, as of the time of filing the report, no further confirmation had been received from the police regarding the number of people abducted or the circumstances surrounding the attack.
