The Nigerian Exchange (NGX) has postponed the implementation of its revised pricing methodology for equities trading, just a day before the new rules were scheduled to take effect on Monday, August 17, 2026. The last-minute decision means investors and market operators will have to wait for a new implementation date, which the Exchange said would be announced later.
The development was confirmed on Sunday by Clifford Akpolo, Group Head, Communications and Partnerships at Nigerian Exchange Group. According to Akpolo, the decision does not mean the new framework has been cancelled. Instead, the rollout has been temporarily pushed back following ongoing stakeholder engagement. “It’s postponed; not shelved,” he clarified, adding that the new date could fall outside August.
The revised pricing framework was expected to introduce a tiered minimum trading volume system, replacing the existing flat pricing bands. Under the proposed rules, stocks priced at N1,000 and above would require a minimum traded quantity of 10,000 units for a price movement, while stocks between N500 and N999.99 would require 50,000 units. Securities below N500 would require 100,000 units. The framework was designed to improve price discovery and ensure that market prices better reflect transactions with meaningful economic value.
The proposed changes had attracted attention from investors and market operators because they could significantly change how prices move, particularly for expensive stocks such as Seplat Energy, Airtel Africa, Dangote Cement, Geregu Power and Nestlé Nigeria. The new system was also expected to reduce the amount of capital required to influence price movements in high-priced stocks, potentially changing trading strategies and creating fresh opportunities for investors.
For now, however, it is business as usual under the existing NGX pricing structure. The current bands covering stocks priced at N100 and above, N5 to below N100, and below N5 will remain in force until the Exchange announces a new effective date. Investors who had positioned themselves ahead of the expected Monday rollout will now have to reassess their strategies and wait for further guidance from NGX.
