Meta has unveiled a new artificial intelligence model designed to expand access to advanced AI beyond major technology companies and large data centres. The move is part of CEO Mark Zuckerberg’s broader vision of making powerful AI tools more widely available, including to people who want to run the technology directly on their own computers.
In an Instagram video announcing the release, Zuckerberg said Meta would make the model’s weights publicly available, allowing users to download and run the system themselves. AI weights are the numerical parameters that help an AI model process information and produce responses, and making them available gives developers and researchers more freedom to experiment with the technology.
Meta is also working on a new class of open-source AI models capable of running on laptops and personal computers. The company believes this approach could reduce dependence on massive data centres, which require significant computing power and energy. Zuckerberg argued that AI should not be controlled mainly by governments or a small group of technology companies, but should give individuals more control over how the technology is used.
The announcement comes amid growing debate in the United States over the future of advanced AI, including concerns about regulation, access to training data and the rapid construction of data centres. Zuckerberg criticised tighter restrictions on foreign open-source AI models, arguing that the US should instead make its own open-source technology more competitive globally by reducing regulatory barriers facing American developers.
Zuckerberg also acknowledged rising opposition to new data-centre projects across the US and announced a new fund aimed at supporting communities that host Meta’s facilities. With the latest AI model, Meta is signalling that the future of artificial intelligence may not only belong to powerful servers and big technology firms, but could increasingly find its way onto everyday computers, putting more AI capabilities directly in the hands of users.
