River AI Raises $1.1 Billion Just Two Months After Launch in Major AI Bet

River AI has made a huge entrance into the artificial intelligence industry, securing a staggering $1.1 billion in funding only two months after its launch. The funding round was led by General Catalyst and AMP PBC, with major names including Nvidia, AMD Ventures, Y Combinator and Temasek also joining the investment. The massive early backing highlights the growing appetite among investors for startups building the next generation of AI technology.

Founded by Igor Babuschkin, a co-founder of xAI, River AI officially emerged from stealth in June with an ambitious goal: to rethink how artificial intelligence is built and trained. Babuschkin, who has previously worked at DeepMind and OpenAI, wants to move beyond today’s model of AI assistants that simply respond to prompts. Instead, River envisions personal AI agents that can learn from their users, understand their needs and become genuinely useful digital companions.

The company is already putting that vision into practice through an API that allows developers to customize open AI models using techniques such as reinforcement learning and low-rank adaptation. Rather than relying heavily on prompt engineering, River wants users to be able to train and improve models they can actually control. The startup says its technology could allow enterprises to run complex reinforcement-learning processes within minutes, without needing a large infrastructure team.

River’s enormous funding round also arrives as businesses increasingly look for more control over their AI systems. Many companies are exploring open-weight models and multiple AI providers instead of depending entirely on closed-source systems. River is positioning itself as a solution to the technical challenge of customizing and post-training those models, while its broader vision is to make personalized AI agents accessible to individuals as well as businesses.

Despite being only months old, River AI now has a financial war chest that gives it plenty of room to pursue its ambitious plans. The company believes the future of AI could involve personal agents that are trained by their owners and work quietly on their behalf, rather than simply replacing human workers. Whether River can turn that bold vision into a widely adopted technology remains to be seen, but its $1.1 billion funding round has already made it one of the most closely watched young AI startups in the industry.
