August dividend race begins as 8 NGX companies set qualification dates

August is shaping up to be an important month for investors on the Nigerian Exchange (NGX) as eight listed companies have announced dividend qualification dates, giving shareholders another opportunity to earn cash rewards from their investments. Companies across sectors such as telecommunications, energy, agriculture, insurance, hospitality, publishing, and investment holdings are rewarding investors with interim, final, and special dividends, making August one of the busiest dividend periods of the year.

For investors seeking passive income, the qualification date is the most important deadline to watch. It determines which shareholders are eligible to receive a declared dividend. Anyone who owns a company’s shares on or before the qualification date will receive the announced payout, while investors who buy the stock after the deadline will miss out on that specific dividend. This makes dividend qualification dates a key consideration for both long-term investors and short-term market participants looking to maximize returns.

Among this month’s biggest announcements, Seplat Energy Plc stands out after declaring a combined dividend of 12 cents per share, made up of a 5-cent interim dividend and a 7-cent special dividend, with shareholders required to qualify by August 13. MTN Nigeria Communications Plc also grabbed investors’ attention by proposing an interim dividend of N26.00 per share, with its qualification date set for August 20. Presco Plc is equally making headlines after announcing both a final dividend of N14.66 per share and an interim dividend of N10.00 per share, giving investors two separate qualification opportunities during the month.

Other companies rewarding shareholders include VFD Group Plc, Ikeja Hotel Plc, The Initiates Plc, Custodian Investment Plc, and University Press Plc. Beyond the dividend announcements, many of these firms delivered impressive financial performances in their latest results. Companies such as Seplat Energy, Presco, MTN Nigeria, The Initiates Plc, and Ikeja Hotel recorded significant increases in revenue and profit after tax, highlighting stronger business fundamentals that continue to support shareholder returns despite evolving market conditions.

The latest announcements reinforce the growing appeal of dividend-paying stocks on the Nigerian Exchange, especially as investors continue to balance income generation with long-term capital appreciation. The development follows a busy July dividend season, during which companies including Dangote Cement, Aradel Holdings, BUA Foods, Fidson Healthcare, and others rewarded shareholders after reporting robust earnings growth. With several major qualification dates spread throughout August, investors will be closely monitoring the market to ensure they secure their positions before the deadlines and benefit from the upcoming payouts.
