Afreximbank has made history by raising a record $1.5 billion through its largest-ever Eurobond issuance, highlighting growing international confidence in Africa’s financial markets and long-term economic potential. The successful dual-tranche bond offering marks the bank’s first public US dollar bond issuance since 2021 and demonstrates that global investors remain eager to back institutions driving trade and development across the continent.
The African Export-Import Bank structured the offering into two equal tranches of $750 million each. The first carries a 5.5-year tenor, maturing in January 2032, while the second has a 10-year tenor, reaching maturity in July 2036. The transaction was designed to provide the bank with long-term funding to support its strategic initiatives aimed at boosting trade, industrialisation, and economic integration throughout Africa.
Investor interest far exceeded expectations, with the order book climbing to an impressive $3.8 billion, making the bond issuance approximately two times oversubscribed. Demand came from institutional investors across the United Kingdom, Europe, Asia, and the United States, reflecting broad international confidence in Afreximbank’s financial strength. Strong demand also enabled the bank to tighten pricing by 37.5 basis points on both tranches, resulting in attractive final yields of 6.25% for the 5.5-year bond and 7.125% for the 10-year bond.
The latest fundraising milestone follows a series of successful alternative market issuances by Afreximbank in recent years. These include Samurai bonds issued in 2024 and 2025 and a Panda bond launched in 2025, demonstrating the institution’s ability to access diverse international capital markets while expanding its funding sources. The latest Eurobond further strengthens its position as one of Africa’s leading multilateral financial institutions.
Speaking on the achievement, Chandi Mwenebungu, Afreximbank’s Managing Director, Treasury and Markets, and Group Treasurer, described the successful issuance as a strong vote of confidence in both the bank and Africa’s future. He noted that investors continue to believe in the continent’s economic prospects and reaffirmed Afreximbank’s commitment to connecting global capital with opportunities that will accelerate trade, industrialisation, infrastructure development, and sustainable economic growth across Africa. The record-breaking transaction sends a powerful signal that international investors remain optimistic about Africa’s long-term investment outlook despite global economic uncertainties.
