Dangote Petroleum Refinery and Petrochemicals FZE has secured a record $2.5 billion in fresh equity funding, marking the largest publicly disclosed primary private equity placement in Africa. The landmark fundraising represents the refinery’s first major equity investment from external investors outside its original shareholder base, highlighting growing global confidence in the company’s long-term vision and its position as one of Africa’s leading industrial projects.

The company announced on Thursday that the capital injection will be used to accelerate the expansion of its refinery and petrochemical complex, strengthen its financial position, and provide greater flexibility for future investments. The equity placement attracted strong participation from a diverse group of investors, including international and African institutional investors, development finance institutions, sovereign-backed investment vehicles, strategic partners, and high-net-worth individuals.

Among the key investors were the Africa Finance Corporation and India Infra Buildco, an investment platform facilitated by the African Export-Import Bank (Afreximbank). Their participation underscores the growing confidence in the refinery’s operational performance and its role in transforming Africa’s energy landscape. The company described the overwhelming investor interest as a strong endorsement of its growth strategy and world-class refining capabilities.

Speaking on the successful fundraising, President of Dangote Industries Limited and Chairman of Dangote Petroleum Refinery and Petrochemicals, Aliko Dangote, described the transaction as a major milestone in the company’s evolution. He said the investment would deepen and institutionalise the refinery’s shareholder base while providing additional capital to complement existing cash flows and financing. Dangote added that the funding reinforces the company’s commitment to expanding Africa’s refining and petrochemical capacity, reducing reliance on imported petroleum products, and strengthening the continent’s energy security.

Managing Director and Chief Executive Officer, David Bird, said the exceptional demand from investors reflected confidence in the refinery’s leadership, operational excellence, and future growth prospects. With the successful completion of the historic equity placement, the company believes it is well-positioned to fast-track its expansion plans, create long-term value for investors, and further cement its status as a key driver of Africa’s industrial and energy development.
