Nigeria has the potential to become home to one of Africa’s largest and most influential capital markets, according to the Group Managing Director and Chief Executive Officer of Nigerian Exchange Group (NGX), Temi Popoola. Speaking during a recent interview, Popoola expressed confidence that the country’s youthful population, entrepreneurial drive, and expanding business landscape provide a solid foundation for long-term growth and global competitiveness.

Popoola noted that Nigeria’s greatest strength lies in its people. He described the nation as home to a vibrant and increasingly upwardly mobile population that continues to create innovative businesses across various sectors. According to him, this entrepreneurial culture, combined with the country’s rich diversity and growing economic potential, places Nigeria in a strong position to attract both local and international investment.

The NGX boss explained that the development of the capital market depends on a healthy relationship between businesses seeking funding and investors looking for opportunities to grow wealth. He said Nigeria already has a growing pipeline of established companies capable of raising capital through the Exchange, while investor participation continues to increase. This balance, he believes, will play a crucial role in deepening the market and enhancing its competitiveness across Africa.

Looking ahead, Popoola identified artificial intelligence, energy, and agriculture as key sectors that could drive Nigeria’s next wave of economic expansion. He emphasized that investment should increasingly flow into industries capable of solving critical development challenges while creating sustainable value. He also highlighted the country’s fast-growing creative economy, saying it represents another major opportunity for wealth creation and innovation within the capital market ecosystem.

Beyond economic growth, Popoola delivered an inspiring message to young Nigerians, encouraging them to embrace learning, adaptability, and innovation. He stressed that the future prosperity of any nation depends on the resilience and ambition of its people. With optimism and a willingness to dream big, he said, Nigerians have the capacity to achieve far more than they imagine, both individually and collectively as a nation.
