Federal Government Unveils Smart National Transport Databank to Revolutionize Nigeria’s Transport System

The Federal Government has announced plans to establish a Smart National Transport Databank (SNTDB) aimed at transforming Nigeria’s transport system through data-driven decision-making and modern digital infrastructure. The initiative was approved by the Federal Executive Council (FEC) and is expected to strengthen planning, reduce congestion, and improve efficiency across all transport sectors.

According to officials, the databank will consolidate information from road, rail, aviation, and maritime operations into a single centralized system. This integrated platform is designed to support evidence-based policymaking, improve infrastructure investment decisions, and enhance overall mobility management across the country.

The project, which will be implemented under a Public–Private Partnership (PPP) arrangement, is being developed in collaboration with Asia-Arab Investment Nigeria Limited. It will adopt the Design–Build–Finance–Operate–Transfer (DBFOT) model and includes major infrastructure components such as 250 solar-powered smart gantries, Traffic Management Centres in all 36 states and the FCT, a national data centre, and RFID-enabled smart E-Tag systems.

Officials from the Nigerian Institute of Transport Technology (NITT) described the approval as a major milestone in Nigeria’s transport modernization agenda. They noted that the system will enable real-time traffic monitoring, automated enforcement, improved road safety, better revenue collection, and stronger coordination among transport-related agencies.

The government further emphasized that the initiative is expected to create jobs, support economic growth, and position Nigeria among countries adopting intelligent transport systems. Stakeholders have been called upon to support the project’s implementation as it represents a significant step toward a smarter, more secure, and data-driven transport ecosystem.
