The conversation around female banking leadership in Africa took center stage in Lagos as the African Women in Banking and Finance Association (AWBFA) held its maiden conference. The event brought together influential women across Nigeria’s financial sector, all united by a shared goal: increasing female representation in leadership roles within banking and finance. The gathering marked a major step toward strengthening inclusion across Africa’s financial ecosystem.

Founder of the AWBFA conference, Wassila Amor, alongside co-founder Dina Amor of Woman Banker Magazine, described the initiative as a continental platform designed to spotlight women shaping Africa’s financial future. They emphasized that the conference is more than an event—it is a growing movement aimed at expanding across African countries to ensure more women occupy decision-making roles in the sector.

Speaking at the conference, Monsurat Vincent of the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) noted that the apex bank is actively supporting female leadership through mentorship, innovation, and collaboration within the financial sector. She stressed that there is still significant room for more women to rise into leadership positions, while encouraging stronger engagement between regulators and industry operators to address challenges.

The President and Chairman of Council of the Chartered Institute of Bankers of Nigeria (CIBN), Pius Olanrewaju—represented by Dr. Mojisola Asieru-Sweet—praised women for their vital contributions to global finance. He urged women to embrace collaboration, strengthen their voices, and take advantage of platforms like AWBFA to drive meaningful impact in the financial system.

Panel discussions led by industry experts including Rafiat Onitiri and Felicia Tamuno focused on breaking barriers and improving women’s representation in banking leadership. Speakers highlighted the importance of mentorship, professional networking, and continuous training. The conference concluded with awards recognizing excellence across 20 categories, celebrating key figures advancing women’s leadership in finance.
