Trump Considers Fuel Tax Cut as Oil Prices Hit $107 Amid US-Iran War
Americans are facing mounting economic pressure as petrol prices continue to climb following the escalating conflict between the United States and Iran. The crisis in the Middle East has disrupted global oil supply routes and pushed crude oil prices to $107 per barrel, deepening concerns over inflation and the rising cost of living across the country.
In response to the worsening fuel situation, US President Donald Trump said he is considering legislation that would suspend federal gas and diesel taxes for 90 days. According to reports from Reuters, the proposed measure would temporarily remove the 18.4-cent gasoline tax and the 24.4-cent diesel tax in a bid to ease pressure on consumers struggling with soaring fuel prices.
The sharp increase in energy costs has been linked to tensions around the Strait of Hormuz, a major global oil transit route through which nearly 20 per cent of the world’s oil supply passes. Iran’s continued restrictions around the waterway have heightened fears of supply disruptions, causing petrol prices in the US to rise to an average of $4.52 per gallon — the highest level recorded since 2022.
The energy crisis is also fueling inflation concerns in the US economy. Data from the US Bureau of Labor Statistics showed inflation climbed to 3.8 per cent in April, its highest level in three years and above analysts’ expectations. Economists say higher fuel costs are beginning to spill into transportation, food, and other sectors, putting additional strain on American households already grappling with rising expenses.
Meanwhile, efforts to secure a ceasefire between the US and Iran appear to have stalled. Trump described Iran’s latest response to a proposed peace agreement as unacceptable, raising fears that hostilities could intensify further. The prolonged conflict has already affected airlines, disrupted global energy flows, and increased pressure on the White House as Americans continue to feel the economic impact of the war.
