AI Job Loss Fears Overstated as Experts Push Back on Anthropic CEO’s Warning

Concerns over artificial intelligence replacing large numbers of entry-level white-collar jobs have sparked global debate, but several experts are now pushing back against those fears. The discussion follows warnings from Anthropic CEO, Dario Amodei, who suggested that AI could significantly disrupt junior-level roles within the next one to five years.

Amodei argued that AI systems are advancing quickly and are already capable of handling tasks traditionally performed by junior staff. These include summarising documents, drafting reports, and generating ideas—functions commonly associated with entry-level office roles. He warned that many individuals, businesses, and policymakers may be underestimating the speed of this transformation.

However, speaking on the podcast Drinks and Mics, finance professional Oluwapelumi Joseph dismissed the idea of widespread unemployment caused by AI. He argued that history shows technological change typically creates new categories of jobs rather than eliminating work altogether. He pointed to emerging roles in compliance, regulation, and AI-related event management as evidence of new opportunities already forming.

Joseph also referenced job postings in the AI sector, noting high-paying roles such as event management positions linked to AI companies, suggesting that demand is shifting rather than disappearing. Similarly, Tunji Andrews, CEO of Awabah, said fears around AI mirror past concerns during earlier industrial changes, stressing that human labour has always adapted alongside technology.

Broader data, however, shows the scale of AI’s impact on the workforce. A report by the International Labour Organization and Poland’s NASK estimates that about 25% of global jobs could be exposed to generative AI, rising to 34% in high-income countries. The International Monetary Fund has also projected that nearly 40% of jobs worldwide may be affected, reinforcing the view that while AI may not eliminate work entirely, it will significantly reshape how work is done.
