California motorists are facing a sharp spike in fuel costs as gas prices in the state have climbed to an average of $6.114 per gallon, marking the highest level recorded since 2023. The increase is being driven by tightening global oil supplies and growing pressure on California’s already fragile fuel supply chain.
A significant portion of California’s crude oil—nearly one-third—comes from the Middle East, making the state highly exposed to disruptions in global shipping routes. According to reports, the most recent crude shipment from the region arrived at the end of April, delivering about 2 million barrels, while further deliveries have stalled due to ongoing traffic disruptions in the Strait of Hormuz.
Energy analysts warn that the situation could worsen in the short term. GasBuddy’s Patrick De Haan told CBS that gasoline prices could rise further to between $6.50 and $7 per gallon, while diesel could approach $8.50 or even $9. He also noted that price relief is unlikely to come quickly, even if geopolitical tensions ease soon.
California’s long-standing energy policies have also come under renewed scrutiny as the state has reduced local oil production and refinery capacity over the years. This has increased reliance on imported fuel, leaving the state more exposed to global market shocks and supply interruptions.
With current trends continuing, some projections suggest fuel prices could climb even higher, with extreme forecasts reaching $10 per gallon in certain areas. For now, drivers across the state are bracing for continued volatility as supply constraints and global uncertainty keep pressure on the market.
