No New Vehicle Tax Introduced by Federal Government, NRS Clarifies Viral Claim

The Nigeria Revenue Service (NRS) has debunked a viral social media infographic suggesting that the Federal Government has introduced a new tax on vehicles. The agency described the claim as false, misleading, and not officially issued by any government authority.

According to the NRS, the misinformation claimed that owners of private, commercial, and corporate vehicles would be required to pay a new tax starting July 1, with instructions to make payments online or through designated banks. However, the service clarified that no such policy has been introduced.

In a statement issued by the Special Adviser to the NRS Chairman, Dr. Zacch Adedeji, Mr. Dare Adekambi, the agency noted that the circulating infographic even contained incorrect website details, misleading users to an unofficial link instead of the authentic NRS portal, http://www.nrs.gov.ng.

Adekambi stressed that the Federal Government has not approved any new vehicle-related tax, warning Nigerians to disregard unverified messages spreading across social media platforms. He urged citizens to always confirm tax-related updates through official communication channels.

The NRS further advised the public to rely strictly on verified government platforms for accurate information, adding that the viral post was deliberately designed to misinform and create unnecessary panic among vehicle owners across the country.
