Dangote Refinery Expansion to Create 95,000 Jobs as Capacity Hits 1.4 Million Barrels Per Day
Aliko Dangote, President of the Dangote Group, has announced that the ongoing expansion of the Dangote Petroleum Refinery will generate about 95,000 skilled jobs at its peak construction phase. The refinery’s capacity is set to rise to 1.4 million barrels per day, positioning it as a major global energy hub.
Dangote made the disclosure in Lagos on Saturday during his induction as an honorary fellow of the Nigerian Academy of Engineering. He described the project as a landmark development in Nigeria’s industrial transformation and a strong commitment to engineering excellence and job creation.
According to him, the expansion reflects a long-term vision to strengthen Nigeria’s industrial base while empowering local professionals. He noted that engineers, technicians, artisans, and other skilled workers will form the backbone of the massive construction effort.
When completed, the refinery is expected to surpass India’s Jamnagar refinery, becoming the largest in the world. Beyond its size, the project is projected to boost local manufacturing, enhance technology transfer, and deepen Nigeria’s oil and gas value chain.
Economically, the expansion is expected to improve fuel security, reduce Nigeria’s reliance on imported petroleum products, and save foreign exchange. Industry experts also believe it will further position Nigeria as a key player in global energy production while inspiring confidence in Africa’s capacity to deliver world-class infrastructure.
