Dangote Refinery Aviation Fuel Exports Hit 1.1 Billion Litres to Europe as Nigeria Supplies 95% of Jet A1 Demand

The Dangote Refinery and Petrochemicals has been described as a major stabilising force in Nigeria’s aviation sector, supplying over 95% of the country’s Jet A1 fuel needs while also expanding its footprint in international markets. According to the Airlines Operators of Nigeria (AON), the refinery has become central to keeping domestic flight operations running despite ongoing global fuel supply pressures.

AON spokesperson Obiora Okonkwo revealed that the refinery exported about 1.1 billion litres of aviation fuel to Europe between March and April 20, 2026. He noted that this output has helped cushion Nigeria’s aviation industry from global disruptions triggered by geopolitical tensions in the Middle East and rising crude oil-related costs worldwide.

However, airline operators say the sector is still under significant pressure at home. They point to rising Jet A1 prices, which have surged sharply despite steady supply from the refinery. Okonkwo alleged that artificial scarcity and inefficiencies within the downstream distribution network are contributing to price increases of up to 300%, worsening operational costs for airlines.

Reacting to the situation, Allen Onyema, Chairman and CEO of Air Peace, described the pricing trend as troubling and called for greater accountability among fuel marketers. He questioned why aviation fuel prices continue to climb so steeply even though Dangote Refinery reportedly offers competitive rates and consistent supply.

Meanwhile, industry data shows that the refinery exported about 876,000 metric tonnes of jet fuel to Europe during the review period, with 456,000 tonnes shipped in March and an additional 420,000 tonnes by April 20. These figures highlight Nigeria’s growing relevance in the global aviation fuel market while reinforcing the Dangote Refinery’s role in strengthening both domestic energy security and international trade flows.
