President Bola Tinubu is expected to sign the ₦68.323 trillion 2026 national budget at any moment after it was officially transmitted to him by the National Assembly. The development signals the final stage of Nigeria’s budget approval process for the new fiscal year.
According to reports, the National Assembly has completed and passed the budget before the Easter break, approving the massive expenditure plan that outlines government spending priorities for the year. Presidential Liaison Officer (Senate), Basheer Lado, confirmed that the document has been delivered to the President for assent.
However, the exact date of the signing remains uncertain. Lado explained that the timing of the approval is solely at the discretion of the President, even though all necessary legislative procedures have already been completed.
The 2026 budget reflects a major expansion in public spending, with ₦32.287 trillion allocated to capital projects—nearly half of the total budget. Key sectors such as health, finance administration, and the judiciary also received significant allocations, including ₦482.758 billion for health and ₦268 billion for judicial funding.
The fiscal plan is part of what officials describe as a “legacy budget” aimed at accelerating infrastructure development, supporting long-term economic growth, and clearing outstanding national obligations. The implementation deadline has also been extended to June 30, 2026, to allow ministries and agencies enough time to complete ongoing projects.
