Google and Slum2School Launch “Stories from Our Home” to Preserve Nigerian Folktales

Google has teamed up with Slum2School Africa and top Nigerian creators to bring the magic of local stories to children through a unique folktale coloring book. The project, titled “Stories from Our Home,” marks the first initiative of its kind in Nigeria, blending cultural heritage with educational tools for young learners.

The program directly addresses the shortage of learning resources in underserved communities. Slum2School Africa will distribute 1,000 copies of the book to primary school pupils, giving children tangible access to stories that reflect their heritage and identity. The initiative emphasizes that education extends beyond classrooms—starting with the stories children are exposed to.

Creative Nigerian artists brought their personal touch to the project. Comedians and musicians like Broda Shaggi, Falz, and Layi Wasabi participated in an Imagination Workshop, where they shared childhood memories and folktales. Using generative AI tools, these narratives were transformed into vivid illustrations for children to enjoy and color, preserving cultural storytelling in an interactive format.

Inked Memory handled the design and publication, ensuring the coloring book meets high educational standards while remaining fun and engaging. Each page allows children to explore Nigerian culture creatively, reinforcing the idea that education and identity go hand in hand.

Slum2School Africa’s founder Otto Orondaam highlighted the project’s impact: “Education is the most powerful tool for breaking the cycle of poverty. Stories from Our Home ensures that every child, no matter where they are born, has access to resources that shape their future.” The initiative exemplifies how storytelling, creativity, and technology can empower the next generation of Nigerians.
