Industry Leaders Raise Concerns Over 6G Readiness as Timelines Accelerate

The telecommunications sector is facing mounting anxiety as the race to 6G accelerates. According to the 2026 DSP Leaders Industry Vision Report, industry sentiment is shifting: while planning continues, many experts fear the sector is already falling behind schedule. This growing unease highlights the challenge of keeping pace with rapidly evolving technology demands.

Although 40% of industry leaders—including senior executives from network operators and cloud providers—believe current research and development efforts are sufficient, those who feel the industry is lagging have surged to 30%, up from 19% last year. The report indicates a narrowing divide, with scepticism toward 6G declining as focus shifts from the “why” to the “when” and “how” of deployment.

Several factors are driving this urgency. The U.S. government reportedly wants Qualcomm to deliver pre-standard 6G chips in time for the 2028 Summer Olympics in Los Angeles, a push referred to as the “Olympic Factor.” Additionally, the NTIA’s “Mission LA 2028” initiative aims to showcase 6G capabilities two years ahead of the official 3GPP specification, intensifying pressure on the industry.

Qualcomm is also taking bold steps to meet these aggressive deadlines. At MWC26, the company announced a major collaboration with industry giants such as Amazon, Microsoft, T-Mobile, and NTT Docomo to deliver commercial 6G systems starting in 2029. Nate Tibbit, Qualcomm’s Senior VP of Global Government Affairs, confirmed that the U.S. government is keen on accelerating the timeline for 6G deployment.

With the pre-commercial 6G debut expected as early as 2028, the industry is scrambling to secure spectrum, regulatory approvals, and technological infrastructure. As TelecomTV notes, the era of 5G dominance is increasingly crowded by the urgency of 6G, signaling a pivotal shift in priorities for telecom operators and technology innovators worldwide.
