The Dangote Petroleum Refinery has made a major move to support Africa’s energy needs, exporting 12 cargoes of refined petroleum products totaling 456,000 tonnes to Côte d’Ivoire, Cameroon, Tanzania, Ghana, and Togo. The shipments, equivalent to roughly 608 million litres, come as the continent faces growing fuel shortages due to geopolitical tensions in the Middle East. This marks a significant milestone since the refinery reached its full capacity of 650,000 barrels per day in February 2026.
A senior refinery official, speaking anonymously, described the exports as a sign of increasing confidence in Nigeria’s refining capacity. “The Dangote Refinery is not just meeting domestic demand but is now a key supplier of high-quality Euro 5 gasoline and diesel to neighboring African countries,” the official said. By producing premium fuels, the facility is positioning Nigeria as a reliable alternative to imported products, historically dominated by Europe and the Middle East.
The refinery’s exports aim to improve energy security across West, East, and Central Africa by cutting dependence on long-haul imports, reducing delivery times, and lowering logistics costs. The official noted that as demand continues to rise, the refinery is strategically prepared to serve both domestic and regional markets without tightening local supply. “We’ve built our strategy to ensure local needs are fully met while supporting our neighbors,” he added.
Recent geopolitical tensions, particularly the Iran war, have exposed Africa’s vulnerability to fuel supply disruptions, prompting countries like South Africa, Ghana, and Kenya to seek alternative suppliers. Bloomberg reports confirm these nations have approached the Dangote Refinery for fuel contracts, highlighting the facility’s rising role as a regional energy hub capable of stabilizing markets during global crises.
Beyond energy supply, the refinery’s sustained exports strengthen Nigeria’s foreign exchange earnings and strategic influence in the continent’s energy market. The milestone reflects a broader trend toward intra-African energy trade, positioning Nigeria at the heart of a new regional fuel distribution network. With its scale, proximity, and high-quality products, the Dangote Refinery is redefining Africa’s fuel landscape and offering a model for regional energy independence.
