Dangote LPG Price Hike Pushes Cooking Gas to N1,000/kg in Nigeria

The cost of cooking gas in Nigeria is climbing again, raising fresh concerns for households already dealing with rising living expenses. Industry marketers have warned that the recent price adjustment by the Dangote Petroleum Refinery, combined with global crude oil pressures, is pushing Liquefied Petroleum Gas (LPG) prices even higher across the country.

Retail prices for cooking gas have now surged to about N1,000 per kilogramme, according to the Nigerian Association of Liquefied Petroleum Gas Marketers. The increase is being driven by a combination of higher ex-depot prices, rising transportation costs, and broader supply chain challenges that continue to impact the energy sector.

At the center of the latest hike is Dangote refinery’s upward review of its LPG ex-gantry price, which moved from between N760 and N800 last week to N825 per kilogramme. Industry stakeholders say this adjustment is already triggering price increases at retail outlets nationwide. Marketers also point to escalating haulage costs, fueled by higher diesel prices and operational bottlenecks, as a major contributor to the rising cost burden.

Beyond local factors, global crude oil trends are playing a significant role. Since LPG is derived from hydrocarbons like propane and butane, any increase in international crude oil prices directly affects its cost. Nigeria’s partial reliance on imports and market-based pricing further exposes consumers to global energy shocks, despite the country’s status as a major gas producer.

For many Nigerians, the impact is immediate and personal. Cooking gas remains a primary fuel for millions of urban households, and rising prices threaten affordability and slow the government’s push toward cleaner energy adoption. Marketers warn that unless crude oil prices ease or targeted interventions reduce logistics and distribution costs, consumers should brace for continued increases in the near term.
