Nigerian Breweries Plc has taken a significant step toward sustainability by acquiring a 29% stake in a new food-grade recycled polyethylene terephthalate (rPET) facility in Ogun State. The move forms part of the company’s broader strategy to support eco-friendly packaging solutions and strengthen Nigeria’s recycling sector.

The partnership will be executed through Indorama Ventures Recycling Solutions Limited, a special purpose vehicle established to develop, own, and operate the recycling plant. Nigerian Breweries clarified that its involvement is limited to minority investment and that it will not participate in the management or control of the facility.

Global collaboration is central to the project, with Indorama Ventures Public Company Limited serving as the major partner and Genesis Energy Group contributing as a minority partner. Indorama Ventures is recognized globally for sustainable chemical production and PET recycling, while Genesis Energy will provide expertise in sustainable infrastructure and energy solutions.

According to the company’s secretary, Uaboi Agbebaku, the investment aligns with Nigerian Breweries’ sustainability ambitions. “NB’s participation will be limited to that of a minority investor with 29% equity interest,” he said, emphasizing that the partnership will help secure a reliable future supply of recycled PET materials in line with Nigeria’s National Policy on Plastic Waste Management.

The brewer noted that the transaction is still subject to regulatory approvals, technical validation, and operational implementation. Once completed, the initiative is expected to play a key role in supporting local recycling industries and advancing Nigeria’s drive toward sustainable packaging solutions.
