Ghana has intensified its diamond export controls as part of an international review under the Kimberley Process Certification Scheme, a global framework designed to prevent conflict diamonds from entering the market. The move reflects Ghana’s commitment to transparency, accountability, and adherence to strict international trade standards.

Speaking at the opening of the Kimberley Process review mission in Accra on March 9, Chief Executive Officer of the Ghana Gold Board, Sammy Gyamfi, emphasized the country’s dedication to responsible diamond trade. “Ghana remains firmly committed to the principles, objectives and requirements of the Kimberley Process Certification Scheme,” Gyamfi said, highlighting the importance of compliance for national development.

The review mission, running from March 9 to March 12 and led by the Russian Federation delegation, aims to evaluate Ghana’s adherence to certification standards. Ghana’s participation underscores its determination to ensure that all diamonds produced and exported are conflict-free and contribute meaningfully to the economy and the well-being of its citizens.

Ghana’s diamond oversight framework is coordinated across multiple agencies, including the Ministry of Lands and Natural Resources, the Minerals Commission, the Customs Division of the Ghana Revenue Authority, and law enforcement agencies. This multi-agency collaboration enables robust export controls, traceability systems, and verification protocols that safeguard the integrity of the country’s diamond trade.

Currently serving as vice-chair of the Kimberley Process, Ghana is set to assume the chairmanship in 2027. Gyamfi described the review as “an important platform for constructive engagement, peer review, mutual learning, and institutional strengthening,” signaling the country’s proactive role in shaping the global diamond industry.
