Dangote Refinery Achieves Fuel Self-Sufficiency, Set to Supply 65 Million Litres of Petrol Daily

Nigeria’s energy landscape is entering a new era as Dangote Petroleum Refinery & Petrochemicals announces it will supply between 60 and 65 million litres of Premium Motor Spirit (PMS) daily for domestic consumption. The refinery’s output not only meets national demand but also allows for a surplus of up to 20 million litres earmarked for export, signaling a historic move toward fuel self-sufficiency.

The increase in production comes after a ramp-up that has positioned the refinery to exceed the country’s average daily petrol consumption of 50 to 60 million litres. With surplus volumes ready for export, international partners have already expressed strong interest in importing Nigeria-made petrol, opening fresh economic opportunities.

Aliko Dangote, President of Dangote Group, confirmed that a structured offtake agreement with selected marketers is in place to ensure nationwide distribution and prevent recurring supply disruptions. “We have agreed on an offtake framework to supply up to 65 million litres daily for the domestic market,” he said, adding that surplus volumes, estimated at 15 to 20 million litres, will be exported.

Industry experts highlight that this milestone could save Nigeria billions in foreign exchange previously spent on petrol imports. Analysts predict that local refining at this scale will strengthen the naira, boost external reserves, and improve the country’s trade balance, while also curbing the speculative practices that historically triggered fuel scarcity.

Engr. Bayo Bashir Ojulari, Group CEO of NNPC Limited, described the refinery as a “transformative national asset” during a recent visit, praising its ability to exceed designed production capacity. “This plant was designed for 650,000 barrels per day, yet we observed live production hitting 661,000 barrels. These are live parameters, not reports or photographs,” Ojulari said, emphasizing the refinery’s potential to redefine Nigeria’s energy security and drive industrial growth.
