The Nigerian National Petroleum Company Limited (NNPC Ltd) has officially unveiled its Gas Master Plan (GMP) 2026, signaling a bold push to strengthen Nigeria’s energy security and drive industrialisation. The launch, held at NNPC Towers, Abuja, brought together key stakeholders and saw the signing of strategic agreements, including a consortium deal for LPG supply.

A major highlight of the plan is the ambitious target to supply 20 million Liquefied Petroleum Gas (LPG) cylinders by 2030, supported by the NNPC LPG and cylinder supply expansion initiative. The event, themed “Driving Exponential Growth Through Value-Adding Partnerships and Cost Efficiency”, also featured the signing of the GMP 2026 Statement of Commitment by NNPC Group CEO Bashir Ojulari and a ministerial statement by the Minister of State for Petroleum Resources (Gas), Ekperikpe Ekpo.

Speaking at the launch, Minister Ekpo emphasized that the GMP represents a shift from policy formulation to disciplined, commercially driven execution. He explained that the plan prioritizes supply reliability, infrastructure expansion, and flexibility in both domestic and export markets, aligning with the federal government’s Decade of Gas Initiative. According to Ekpo, the strategy positions natural gas as a backbone for Nigeria’s energy security, industrialisation, and energy transition.

NNPC CEO Bashir Ojulari highlighted the country’s 210 trillion cubic feet of proven gas reserves, with a potential upside of 600 Tcf. He said the GMP 2026 aims to surpass national targets for gas production—10 billion standard cubic feet per day by 2027 and 12 billion by 2030—while attracting over $60 billion in investments across the gas value chain. The plan also emphasizes operational excellence, cost optimisation, and the systematic development of gas resources to support power generation, CNG, LPG, Mini-LNG, and industrial users.

Industry leaders expressed strong support for the initiative. Adegbite Falade, Chairman of the Independent Petroleum Producers’ Group, praised the plan’s integrated approach, while Matthieu Bouyer, MD of TotalEnergies Upstream Companies in Nigeria, reaffirmed his company’s commitment. The GMP 2026, building on the 2008 Nigerian Gas Master Plan, is expected to provide a clear roadmap for gas sector growth, investment coordination, and value creation over the next decade.
