Apple and Google have announced a groundbreaking multi-year partnership that will see Apple’s Siri digital assistant powered by Google’s Gemini AI technology. The collaboration represents a rare alliance between two long-time rivals, combining Apple’s device ecosystem with Google’s leading artificial intelligence capabilities.
The decision signals a major shift for Apple, which has historically relied on in-house technology development. According to a joint statement, Apple chose Gemini AI after a “careful evaluation,” concluding that Google’s system offered “the most capable foundation” to accelerate the company’s AI ambitions across its devices.
Despite competition in the smartphone market, the two tech giants have maintained a profitable relationship for years, with Google paying Apple billions annually to remain the default search engine on iPhones. That arrangement has drawn regulatory scrutiny, with the U.S. Justice Department claiming it bolsters Google’s search monopoly, though a judge recently ruled that the deal can continue.
Financial terms of the Gemini AI partnership were not disclosed. Analysts, including Dan Ives of Wedbush Securities, called the deal a “major validation moment for Google” and a strategic step for Apple to strengthen its AI roadmap. Apple reportedly also explored collaborations with OpenAI, Anthropic, and Perplexity before finalizing the deal.
While the partnership will enhance Siri, Apple will continue using its own Apple Intelligence system at the device level to power iPhones and iPads, preserving “industry-leading privacy standards.” The company is promising an improved Siri release later this year after previous delays, while tech rivals like Google, Microsoft, and OpenAI continue to push the boundaries of AI.
