ChatGPT’s mobile app has reached a major milestone, generating an estimated $3 billion in worldwide consumer spending since its launch in May 2023, according to app analytics firm Appfigures. Initially available only on iOS, the app has expanded to Android, attracting millions of users globally and driving rapid adoption.

The surge in revenue has been particularly pronounced this year. In 2025 alone, ChatGPT mobile users spent around $2.48 billion, marking a staggering 408% increase from the $487 million recorded in 2024. In its debut year, 2023, the app earned $42.9 million, highlighting its explosive growth trajectory in just a few short years.

Compared with other popular apps, ChatGPT’s revenue growth stands out. It reached the $3 billion milestone in just 31 months, faster than TikTok, which took 58 months, and streaming giants Disney+ and HBO Max, which took 42 and 46 months respectively. This rapid adoption underscores the growing consumer interest in AI-powered tools.

AI competitor xAI’s Grok has shown a similar revenue trajectory, particularly after its broader release in 2024. While other AI apps have struggled to monetize as quickly, Grok closely mirrors ChatGPT’s early performance, highlighting the potential of subscription-based AI services in the consumer market.

ChatGPT’s revenue comes primarily from paid subscriptions like ChatGPT Plus at $20 per month and ChatGPT Pro at $200 per month, but monetization strategies are expanding. The app recently launched its own mini app store, and future revenue streams may include advertising and developer offerings. Analysts note that as AI adoption grows, mobile apps like ChatGPT are poised to reshape both consumer behavior and the broader digital economy.
