Seplat Energy has successfully hosted a two-day capacity-building workshop for 35 journalists from Edo and Delta States, focusing on strengthening modern media skills. The program, held in Benin City, covered report writing, mobile journalism, media technology, personal effectiveness, and digital marketing. Journalists from print, broadcast, and online platforms attended the training, representing cities such as Benin, Asaba, Warri, and Sapele.
Stanley Opara, Seplat Energy’s Corporate Communications Manager, emphasized the importance of continuous learning for journalists, highlighting that ethical and impactful reporting benefits both the media and society at large. “Seplat believes that supporting journalists through capacity building strengthens the media ecosystem, which ultimately benefits everyone,” Opara said. He added that the company remains committed to ongoing collaboration with the media to create meaningful impact.
The workshop featured practical sessions led by media trainer Nnamdi Uwaemelulam, who instructed participants on effective report writing and mobile journalism. Uwaemelulam demonstrated how smartphones and basic digital tools can improve storytelling, while also highlighting the significance of clarity, strong leads, and fact-checking in journalistic work. Sessions also explored emerging trends in media technology and the need for journalists to embrace digital transformation.
Veteran broadcaster Patrick Oke discussed the role of media in national development, emphasizing the need for competence and professionalism. Dr. Solomon Avbioroko, former Lagos Business School lecturer, guided participants through self-analysis and transactional exercises, teaching personal effectiveness strategies such as time management, decision-making, and positive workplace communication. His sessions encouraged journalists to develop disciplined work habits and build strong professional relationships.
The program concluded with digital marketing insights from strategist Abiola Adedeji, who illustrated how journalists can leverage online platforms, analytics, and digital tools to grow their audience and enhance reporting. Participants described the training as timely and valuable, noting that the skills acquired will help them thrive in Nigeria’s fast-evolving media landscape.
