The NNPC/Heirs Energies OML 17 Joint Venture (JV) has achieved a major breakthrough in Nigeria’s gas sector, doubling its gas output to 135 million standard cubic feet per day (MMscf/d). This milestone was made possible through an innovative rigless recompletion of a key non-associated gas well—the first of its kind in Nigeria—transforming power generation across the eastern network.

Previously, the well had been shut due to excessive water production. Instead of drilling a new well or performing a conventional workover, Heirs Energies engineered a rigless through-tubing recompletion into an untapped reservoir interval. The operation was completed safely, in record time, and at just 15% of the cost of a traditional well, setting a new benchmark for cost-effective and innovative solutions in Nigeria’s upstream oil and gas sector.

The gas supply boost has had an immediate impact on the region’s power generation. Transcorp PLC’s TransAfam Power plant has quadrupled its output, jumping from 50 megawatts to over 180 megawatts, with peak generation reaching 200 megawatts. Other plants, including First Independent Power Limited (FIPL) and Geometric Power, are now experiencing more stable operations and increased production. Combined, the gas-fed plants have surged from around 100 megawatts to more than 350 megawatts.

This increase in power generation translates into reliable electricity for hundreds of thousands of homes and businesses, supporting hospitals, schools, factories, small enterprises, and critical infrastructure. The development also contributes to reducing blackouts and strengthening local economies.

Top officials have praised the achievement. Mrs. Olu Verheijen, Special Adviser to the President on Energy, called it “a testament to the strength of Nigerian engineering expertise and persistent technical innovation.” NNPC’s Udy Ntia highlighted the partnership’s role in unlocking the nation’s gas resources, while Heirs Energies CEO Osa Igiehon emphasized the ingenuity and dedication of their 100% Nigerian workforce in supporting the country’s gas-to-power agenda.
