MTN Fintech Wins Regional Award for Advancing Digital Literacy and Financial Inclusion Across Africa
MTN Group Fintech has achieved a historic milestone by winning the first-ever Regional Platform Business Award at the Y’ello Care Awards 2025, recognizing its exceptional role in promoting digital literacy and community empowerment across Africa. The award highlights MTN Fintech’s innovative projects under the MoMo platform, which continue to transform lives through technology-driven social initiatives.
Across several African markets—including Nigeria, Rwanda, the Ivory Coast, Benin, Cameroon, South Sudan, and Uganda—MoMo teams implemented impactful community projects focusing on digital skills development, financial inclusion, healthcare access, and support for vulnerable groups. Initiatives ranged from training people on mobile money systems and digital literacy to installing solar panels in community centers and donating essential supplies to underserved populations.
MTN’s Y’ello Care initiative, powered by employee-led volunteerism, underscores the company’s long-standing commitment to uplifting disadvantaged communities. This year’s campaign emphasized digital empowerment, with MTN providing smartphones, building community digital hubs, and offering digital literacy classes to equip individuals with future-ready skills while addressing unemployment and economic inequality.
In addition to promoting education and entrepreneurship, the Fintech arm also focused on healthcare and inclusion. Efforts included providing smartphones to health workers, solar-powered energy solutions for clinics, and health awareness drives around HIV/AIDS prevention. Notably, MTN Fintech’s Ivory Coast team worked with people with albinism and the deaf community, providing business and leadership training to foster independence through mobile technology.
Accepting the award, MTN Group Fintech Chief Legal Officer, Nikiwe Tanga, lauded the achievement as proof of the company’s purpose-driven mission. “By focusing on digital literacy, financial inclusion, healthcare access, and vulnerable group support, MoMo is not only enhancing lives but also building stronger, more resilient communities,” she said. The recognition reaffirms MTN Fintech’s commitment to leveraging technology for sustainable development, empowering millions across Africa to thrive in a digital economy.
