Nigerian Breweries Completes Full Integration of Distell Nigeria to Boost Wine and Spirit Production
Nigerian Breweries Plc has officially completed the full integration of Distell Nigeria Limited into its operations, marking a major milestone in its strategic expansion beyond beer production. The integration follows the company’s final acquisition of Distell in March 2025, solidifying its presence in the wines and spirits market.
Speaking during a media parley in Lagos, the Corporate Affairs Director of Nigerian Breweries, Uzodinma Odenigbo, announced that the company has commissioned a state-of-the-art manufacturing line for Distell products at its Ibadan Brewery. With the facility now fully operational, production has commenced for popular brands such as Chamdor and 4th Street, which are expected to strengthen Nigerian Breweries’ footprint in the non-beer segment.
Odenigbo highlighted that the successful integration aligns with the company’s long-term goal of becoming a “Total Beverage Company.” This move, he said, reflects Nigerian Breweries’ commitment to diversifying its product portfolio to meet the growing consumer demand for wines, spirits, and ready-to-drink beverages. The new facility, according to him, also enhances local manufacturing capacity and supports job creation within the beverage industry.
The journey toward this full integration began in June 2024, when Nigerian Breweries acquired an 80% majority stake in Distell Wines and Spirits Nigeria after receiving approval from the South African Reserve Bank. The remaining 20% minority stake was later purchased in March 2025 from Ekulo International and Next International Nigeria Limited, completing the acquisition process.
With the integration finalized, Nigerian Breweries is now strategically positioned to compete across multiple beverage categories, from beers to premium wines and spirits. Industry analysts say this move could redefine Nigeria’s alcoholic beverage landscape and position the company for stronger growth in both local and regional markets.
