The Federal Government has unveiled a landmark digital infrastructure project designed to connect 20 million new internet users across Nigeria. The initiative will see the deployment of 90,000 kilometres of fibre-optic cables and the construction of 7,000 telecom towers, aimed at bridging the nation’s digital divide and fostering economic inclusion.
Minister of Communications, Innovation, and Digital Economy, Dr. Bosun Tijani, announced the project during the 4th Nordic-Nigeria Connect 2025 event in Lagos, themed “Forging Partnerships for Sustainable Impact.” He said the development aligns with President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s Renewed Hope Agenda, which prioritizes inclusive and sustainable digital growth for all Nigerians.
Dr. Tijani explained that the government is also repositioning the national satellite infrastructure to enhance internet connectivity in both urban and rural areas. “Affordable and meaningful connectivity is no longer a luxury but a necessity,” he said, adding that a dedicated professional team has been set up to drive this transformation.
Highlighting Nigeria’s youthful population as a key advantage in the digital age, Tijani revealed that the 3 Million Technical Talent (3MTT) programme—the world’s largest tech talent initiative—has received €12 million support from the Danish government. He emphasized that digital tools will be integral in modernizing public service delivery, supported by the new Digital Public Infrastructure Standard and Framework released by the ministry.
The minister also signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) with Denmark, focusing on connectivity, digital governance innovation, and opportunities for young Nigerians to work with Danish companies. Nordic nations, including Finland, Sweden, and Norway reaffirmed their commitment to Nigeria’s growth, pledging investments in innovation, sustainability, and green energy. Lagos State, represented by Mr. Samuel Egube, announced plans to launch the Lagos-Nordic Innovation Corridor, set to position the state as Africa’s hub for smart city and green tech solutions.
