CBN Launches Payments System Vision 2028, Urges Nigerians and Diaspora to Embrace Digital Financial Inclusion
The Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) has called on Nigerians at home and in the diaspora to embrace the newly unveiled Payments System Vision 2028, a strategic framework aimed at accelerating digital transformation and expanding financial inclusion across the country. CBN Governor, Dr. Olayemi Michael Cardoso, made the appeal on Thursday in Calabar, Cross River State, during the opening session of the CBN Fair.
Speaking on the theme, “Driving Alternative Payment Channels as Tools for Financial Inclusion, Growth and Accelerated Economic Development,” Governor Cardoso highlighted that the vision would enable safer, faster, and more reliable transactions, ultimately strengthening Nigeria’s economy. Represented by Mr. Uche Tobias, Assistant Director of Corporate Communications, Cardoso emphasized that this initiative would ensure Nigeria’s payments system becomes globally competitive.
The governor also pointed to key CBN initiatives that complement the new vision, including exchange rate unification, bank recapitalization, and the launch of a non-resident Bank Verification Number (BVN) to connect Nigerians abroad with home banking services. “These efforts are designed to broaden financial access and create a robust, inclusive banking environment,” he said.
At the fair, stakeholders, including Calabar Branch Controller Mr. Jobunoh Nwannemeka and President of the Calabar Chambers of Commerce, Mr. Kelly Ayamba, stressed that the event fosters transparency, financial literacy, and active engagement with CBN policies. Ayamba noted that the fair encourages citizens to access financial services and actively participate in development policies that drive economic growth at both state and national levels.
The event also featured presentations on CBN operations, innovations in the Nigerian Payments System, microfinance developments, and foreign exchange market updates. Officials reminded the public of the importance of maintaining the Naira’s integrity as a symbol of national pride, reinforcing the broader goal of cultivating a financially inclusive and digitally empowered Nigeria.
