The Federal Government has officially launched the 1Government Cloud (1Gov) Digitalisation Project, a sovereign platform designed to modernise public service and eliminate paper-based operations across Ministries, Departments, and Agencies (MDAs). The project, implemented by Galaxy Backbone Limited under the Sovereign Digitalisation Programme, is being pioneered by strategic institutions including the Ministry of Communications, Innovation & Digital Economy, Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Ministry of Justice, and the Federal Airports Authority of Nigeria, among others.

According to government officials, the 1Gov Cloud initiative represents a milestone in Nigeria’s digital transformation journey, with the goal of strengthening data sovereignty, improving efficiency, and aligning with global standards in e-governance. The platform integrates multiple tools—such as GovDrive for secure file storage, GovMail for official communication, and GovE-Sign for legally recognised digital approvals—that collectively enable faster decision-making and cost savings.

Programme Director Wumi Oghoetuoma highlighted that the paperless governance initiative is designed to remove bureaucratic bottlenecks while promoting accountability. “This project will cut costs on printing and storage, streamline approvals, and ensure transparency in service delivery,” he explained. He added that with a unified platform for MDAs, Nigeria is laying the foundation for a seamless digital ecosystem that supports the government’s Renewed Hope Agenda.

Professor Ibrahim Adeyanju, Managing Director/CEO of Galaxy Backbone, described the launch as a “turning point” for the nation’s civil service. “With 1Gov, Nigeria is entering a new era of smart governance—faster decisions, more secure documentation, and improved services for citizens. This is about building a government that is globally competitive,” he noted. Diplomats have also praised the initiative, saying the sovereign system will enhance Nigeria’s international communications and responsiveness.

The rollout comes after the Head of Civil Service of the Federation, Didi Esther Walson-Jack, mandated all MDAs to adopt digital workflows by December 2025 under the Federal Civil Service Strategy and Implementation Plan (FCSSIP 25). With staff training and infrastructure upgrades already underway, the government hopes the 1Gov Cloud will not only modernise governance but also restore citizens’ trust in efficient, transparent, and digitally driven public service delivery
