Technology and economic experts have urged Nigeria to accelerate the adoption of Artificial Intelligence (AI) and digital innovation as a catalyst for economic diversification and sustainable growth. The call was made in Abuja at a lecture organised by Economic Confidential, where stakeholders stressed that Nigeria must not miss out on the opportunities of the Fourth Industrial Revolution.

Delivering the keynote address, Director General of the National Information Technology Development Agency (NITDA), Dr. Kashifu Inuwa, noted that the digital economy could contribute up to 20 percent of Nigeria’s GDP if properly harnessed. He emphasized that AI is now essential for productivity and competitiveness, warning that nations leading in AI will ultimately lead the world. Inuwa also disclosed that NITDA is working with the Ministry of Education to integrate digital literacy into school curricula and partnering with the Civil Service to boost digital training.

Experts at the event also highlighted the importance of cybersecurity in Nigeria’s digital transformation journey. Inuwa stressed that while mobile technology now empowers even market women to reach customers, the country must invest heavily in digital protection to safeguard users and institutions.

Dr. Afolabi Olajuwon of the Budget Office, speaking on behalf of the Nigerian Institute of Public Relations (NIPR), warned that African nations risk being left behind if they fail to embrace digital technology. He added that Nigeria, with its large population and talent pool, must go beyond being a consumer of technology to becoming a creator and exporter of innovation. According to him, Nigeria’s $1 trillion economy target is realistic if infrastructure, capacity building, and policies support digital growth.

The lecture, themed “Renewed Hope Agenda for a Digital Global Economy,” also featured the unveiling of three new books by young journalists. Organisers, led by Economic Confidential CEO Yushau Shuaib, said the event was designed to strengthen national dialogue on digital transformation. He added that initiatives such as the PRNigeria Young Communication Fellowship will continue to mentor young professionals in AI, journalism, and digital communication, ensuring Nigeria positions itself as a leader in the global knowledge economy.
