Integrating technology and advanced analytics into transport systems can significantly improve efficiency and road safety, according to transportation engineering consultant Ahmed Oyeyemi. Oyeyemi, who works with the Maryland Department of Transportation State Highway Administration in the United States, highlighted that innovations such as sensors, real-time data analysis, and intelligent transport systems are crucial tools in reducing traffic congestion and preventing accidents.
Speaking on Thursday, Oyeyemi stressed that while building and upgrading infrastructure is essential, it alone cannot solve transportation challenges. He explained that a combination of technology, policy, and consideration of human behavior is necessary to create safer, more efficient transport systems. “Infrastructure development is important, but it must be complemented by smart policies and behavioural insights,” he noted.
Drawing lessons from Lagos, Oyeyemi pointed out that rapid urbanisation has led to increased accident rates, placing immense pressure on existing transport networks. He argued that smart transport solutions, including data-driven traffic management and intelligent monitoring systems, can mitigate these issues by improving traffic flow and enhancing safety for commuters.
Oyeyemi, who is developing frameworks such as Vision Zero Freight and Smart Mobility, emphasized that technology can also reduce emissions, improve trucking safety, and ensure equitable access to transportation. “Transportation is not just about moving people and goods; it is about saving lives, protecting the environment, and ensuring economic competitiveness,” he said.
The expert concluded that addressing mobility challenges requires a holistic approach that combines infrastructure investment with technological innovation, effective policies, and public awareness. By embracing smart transport solutions, cities can enhance road safety, reduce congestion, and create sustainable, efficient urban mobility systems.
