Microsoft has officially launched a new AI-driven feature called “Copilot Mode” in its Edge browser, aiming to enhance user experience through artificial intelligence. The rollout comes as part of the company’s broader strategy to compete in the rapidly evolving AI-driven web browsing space, alongside competitors such as Google, OpenAI, and Perplexity AI.

The newly introduced Copilot Mode is designed to streamline browsing by allowing users to perform tasks, organize web searches into topic-based clusters, and compare data across tabs without manually switching between them. This all-in-one interface is powered by a single input box that combines chat, search, and navigation capabilities, significantly simplifying user interaction.

The move comes amid a wave of AI advancements in web browsing. Nvidia-backed Perplexity AI recently introduced its Comet browser, and OpenAI is reported to be working on a similar tool. Google, through its parent company Alphabet, launched its “AI Mode” earlier this year, showing notable growth in user engagement from the integration of AI into its search services.

Microsoft emphasized that Copilot Mode will soon have the ability to access user browsing history, stored credentials, and other contextual data — but only with explicit user permission. This will enable it to handle more advanced tasks, such as booking appointments or managing online errands. Visual cues will indicate when Copilot is active in the background to maintain transparency.

Copilot Mode will be available at no cost to users across Windows and Mac PCs in supported markets for a limited time. Microsoft also confirmed that users will retain control over the feature, including the option to opt out entirely through their Edge browser settings.
