As part of the global observance of Global Accessibility Awareness Day (GAAD), tech entrepreneurs and industry leaders have reaffirmed their dedication to promoting digital inclusion. Held every third Thursday in May, GAAD aims to raise awareness about accessible technology and the importance of ensuring that digital solutions are available to all, especially underserved communities.

During a conference to mark the day, Asma’u Abdullahi, Executive Director of Slumtech, emphasized the need for inclusive platforms in the FinTech sector. She explained how Slumtech is actively supporting rural communities through mentorship programs and initiatives that boost female participation in technology. These efforts, she said, aim to connect and empower individuals in marginalized areas.

Eric Obianozie, founder of 24 Telemed, shared the difficulties faced while implementing telemedicine in Nigeria’s remote regions like Anambra and Kaduna. Despite initial resistance, he expressed hope that events like GAAD would help break down barriers to technology adoption and highlight the transformative role tech can play in healthcare, education, and economic empowerment.

Meanwhile, Jakpo Ukueku, CEO of Rayven Strategic Communication Limited, addressed the information and infrastructure deficits holding back digital innovation in Nigeria. He pointed out that many potential tech users and innovators lack both the tools and the knowledge necessary to thrive in the digital economy.

Overall, GAAD served as a platform to call for greater action in making accessibility central to technological innovation. Tech leaders urged stakeholders to treat inclusivity as a core principle in development, ensuring equitable access for all, and paving the way for a more inclusive digital future.
