Google has launched a new AI-powered coding assistant called Gemini Code Assist, offering a free version to developers in Nigeria. This tool, based on Google’s Gemini 2.0 model, supports all programming languages and is designed to optimize coding tasks. The initiative aims to make advanced AI tools accessible to independent developers, students, and startups who often face challenges in obtaining such resources. By providing these tools for free, Google is helping to empower the next generation of developers in Nigeria with essential digital skills for future innovation.

The launch of Gemini Code Assist is part of Google’s effort to democratize access to AI technology. According to Google, over 75% of developers now incorporate AI into their daily workflows, with the company claiming that more than 25% of its new code is AI-generated and validated by engineering teams. Unlike other free coding assistants that limit code completions, Gemini Code Assist offers up to 180,000 completions monthly, far surpassing what most developers would need, ensuring it can be used by even the most dedicated individuals.

In addition to code completion, Gemini Code Assist also supports AI-powered code reviews through GitHub, both for public and private repositories. This feature helps to streamline the often time-consuming code review process, making it more efficient for developers. The assistant integrates smoothly into popular integrated development environments (IDEs) such as Visual Studio Code, JetBrains, Firebase, and Android Studio, allowing developers to generate code snippets, debug, and modify applications without the need to switch between different tools.

Google’s decision to expand Gemini Code Assist in Nigeria is aligned with the global growth of the developer population. With this initiative, Google aims to continue supporting developers worldwide by providing high-quality, accessible AI tools that foster innovation and development in the tech community.
