The Nigerian government has signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with the University of Portsmouth (UoP) to enhance local capacity in the oil and gas sector. This partnership aims to train Nigerians within the country, aligning with global energy transition trends and improving local expertise. The Minister of State for Petroleum Resources, Senator Heineken Lokpobiri, emphasized the importance of localized capacity development in light of the ongoing energy transition.

The MoU represents a shift from previous programs where Nigerians were trained abroad through collaborations with UoP. This initiative is expected to increase accessibility to training and expand opportunities for more Nigerians to develop relevant skills for both the national and global energy sectors. The Attorney General, Chief Lateef Fagbemi, expressed support for the partnership, highlighting its potential to reshape Nigeria’s workforce in the global energy landscape.

The Executive Secretary of the Petroleum Technology Development Fund (PTDF), Mr. Ahmed Galadima Aminu, and UoP’s Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Graham Galbraith, both praised the collaboration as an important step toward improving local capacity. The partnership builds on years of experience with PTDF programs and aims to make training more accessible to a wider population.
