The price of cooking gas (Liquefied Petroleum Gas, LPG) in Nigeria decreased by 13.3% in January 2025, with the cost of refilling a 12.5kg cylinder dropping to N16,250 from N18,750 in December 2024. The price of 1kg of gas also fell to N1,300 from N1,500, with some gas plants selling at even lower rates, ranging from N1,250 to N1,400 per kg.

The National President of the Nigerian Association of Liquefied Petroleum Gas Marketers (NALPGAM), Mr. Olatunbosun Oladapo, stated that the reduction in prices is a result of government measures and local production, which now accounts for more than 70% of gas consumption in Nigeria. He emphasized that ensuring LPG’s affordability is key to promoting its widespread use for cooking.

Despite the price drop, Oladapo criticized some gas plants for selling above the standard price, labeling them as exploitative. He stressed that the open market system, combined with daily price awareness, helps curb such practices and encourages healthy competition, which could further drive prices down.
