The US National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) has launched an investigation into a United Airlines flight that was forced to return to Lagos, Nigeria, after experiencing a “sudden aircraft movement” mid-air. The incident occurred on January 24, 2025, as Flight 613, a Boeing 787-8, was en route to Washington Dulles International Airport. United Airlines initially attributed the issue to a technical problem and clarified that it was not caused by severe turbulence.
The airline reported that four passengers and two crew members sustained minor injuries and were treated at a hospital, while Nigerian aviation officials stated that 38 people were injured. The aircraft was carrying 245 passengers and 11 crew members at the time of the incident.
United Airlines is cooperating with Nigerian authorities to determine the cause of the incident. The NTSB has announced that a preliminary report on the event will be released within 30 days.
