The Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC) and the Federal Competition and Consumer Protection Commission (FCCPC) have signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) to enhance consumer protection in the telecommunications industry. The agreement, signed in Abuja, aims to ensure a fair and competitive market while safeguarding consumer interests. At the event, NCC’s Executive Vice Chairman, Dr. Aminu Maida, emphasized the importance of collaboration between regulatory bodies, particularly in a rapidly evolving technological landscape. He noted that the telecom sector is a key driver of Nigeria’s economic and social growth, making consumer protection a top priority.

Dr. Maida highlighted that the MoU will create regulatory clarity, prevent uncertainties, and promote a transparent and competitive telecom industry. By working together, the NCC and FCCPC aim to uphold consumer rights while aligning their efforts with the federal government’s Ease of Doing Business initiative. The partnership underscores the necessity of synergy in regulatory oversight, ensuring that both consumers and service providers operate within a fair and well-regulated framework.

FCCPC’s Executive Vice Chairman, Mr. Tunji Bello, commended the NCC for the collaboration, noting that overlapping regulations are designed to prevent gaps in consumer protection. He referenced Section 105 of the Federal Competition and Consumer Protection Act (FCCPA) 2018, which mandates cooperation between regulatory agencies. Bello stressed that the agreement will enhance oversight without regulatory conflicts or duplication, ensuring that Nigerian consumers receive the protection they deserve in the evolving telecommunications sector.
