Hon. Mojisola Lasbat Meranda has been elected as the new Speaker of the Lagos State House of Assembly, Mudashiru Obasa, who was impeached over allegations of gross misconduct and abuse of office. Before her appointment, Meranda served as the Deputy Speaker. The leadership change marks a significant political shift in Lagos, with Meranda assuming the role amidst a cloud of controversy surrounding her predecessor.

Obasa’s impeachment comes in the wake of multiple petitions filed with the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC), accusing him of financial misconduct, including the embezzlement of funds, breach of trust, and unauthorized financial decisions. Allegations against Obasa include awarding inflated contracts and mismanaging N17 billion earmarked for projects. A youth-led group also alleged misuse of N200 million for events at the Assembly. Obasa has dismissed these claims as baseless and politically motivated, particularly as election season looms.

The Progressive Youth Movement and other anti-corruption groups have played a pivotal role in raising public awareness about the alleged irregularities. They accuse Obasa of using proxy companies to siphon funds and violating procurement laws. While Obasa continues to deny wrongdoing, his impeachment signals growing accountability pressures in Nigerian governance. The new Speaker, Meranda, is now tasked with restoring trust and stability in the Lagos State Assembly.
