Transcorp Power has announced plans to boost Nigeria’s electricity generation with an additional 150 megawatts (MW), despite current challenges with gas supply to its thermal power plants. The Group’s Chief Executive Officer, Mrs. Owen Omogiafo, shared this development at the Future Investment Initiative conference in Saudi Arabia, emphasizing the company’s commitment to expanding energy availability. Transcorp recently signed a memorandum of understanding with Nigeria’s Rural Electrification Agency to support its renewable energy initiatives.
Omogiafo highlighted Transcorp’s focus on renewable energy investment and partnerships as a way to help close the country’s energy gap. Through the recent agreement, Transcorp Power aims to deliver significant capacity to the Nigerian grid, enhancing access to electricity for underserved regions. She noted that such collaborations are crucial for achieving a sustainable power supply and addressing Nigeria’s energy challenges.
The CEO further explained the impact of gas shortages on Transcorp’s current generation capacity, particularly at the Afam power plant, which has an installed capacity of 301MW but is currently supplying just 100MW due to limited gas. Omogiafo stressed that a more integrated gas-to-power strategy could mitigate this shortfall and unlock broader energy potential across Africa, potentially transforming the continent’s energy landscape.
