Dangote Backs Tinubu’s CNG Drive, Invests Over $280m In Trucks, Infrastructure
Dangote Cement Plc has invested over $280 million in compressed natural gas (CNG) technology, making it the largest operator of CNG trucks in Nigeria. This substantial investment aligns with President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s initiative to provide affordable, cleaner fuel alternatives through CNG for Nigerians, including distributing one million free CNG conversion kits. President Tinubu has emphasized the necessity of leveraging Nigeria’s abundant natural gas resources to drive economic growth and reduce emissions, marking a vital shift in Nigeria’s approach to transportation and energy.
Dangote Cement’s Group Managing Director, Arvind Pathak, stated that the company aims to transition its entire fleet to CNG, with 3,100 mono-fuel CNG trucks expected by year’s end. Dangote Cement’s goal is to operate predominantly on CNG by mid-2026, supported by the expansion of CNG fueling stations at its facilities, including a 3,000-truck refueling station in Obajana and a new station under construction in Ibese. This strategic investment supports Nigeria’s clean energy transition, reinforces Dangote’s leadership in the CNG sector, and aligns with the government’s efforts to improve energy independence.
Aliko Dangote, President and CEO of the Dangote Group, reiterated the company’s commitment to Nigeria’s climate goals, aligning with the nation’s Paris Agreement pledge to reach net-zero emissions by 2060. He praised President Tinubu’s leadership and the “Renewed Hope Agenda,” which facilitates private sector involvement in Nigeria’s journey toward energy efficiency and sustainability.
