Mainpower Electricity Distribution Limited, a subsidiary of the Enugu Electricity Distribution Company (EEDC), has received an interim license from the newly formed Enugu State Electricity Regulatory Commission (EERC) to handle electricity distribution within Enugu State. This marks the conclusion of the transfer of regulatory control from the Nigerian Electricity Regulatory Commission (NERC) to the EERC, allowing Mainpower to assume responsibility for electricity services in the state. The Chairman/CEO of EERC, Mr. Chijioke Okonkwo, urged Mainpower to ensure that efficient, reliable, and sustainable power delivery continues as they oversee the state’s electricity distribution.

In his acceptance speech, Mainpower Board Member Mr. Kester Enwereonu highlighted that this transition signifies the start of a new era in the power sector. The company aims to integrate advanced technology and smart tools to modernize the electricity distribution network. Enwereonu emphasized Mainpower’s commitment to utilizing data-driven strategies to boost efficiency, improve service delivery, and create a future-ready power distribution system capable of ensuring uninterrupted electricity supply across Enugu.

This regulatory shift comes in the wake of Nigeria’s new Electricity Act, which grants states the autonomy to regulate electricity generation, transmission, and distribution within their territories. With Enugu State’s regulatory oversight now fully in place, the EEDC will no longer operate in the state, though it will continue to serve other states like Abia, Anambra, Ebonyi, and Imo.
