Refugees Contribute $124b To U.S. Economy

President Joe Biden has signed a decision to set the U.S. refugee admissions goal at 125,000 for Fiscal Year 2025, an increase from the 100,000 refugees resettled in 2024, the largest number in three decades.

Secretary of State Anthony Blinken praised refugees for contributing $124 billion to the U.S. economy over 15 years and emphasized America’s role in providing refuge to those fleeing persecution.

Blinken highlighted that refugee resettlement strengthens U.S. communities, driving urban revitalization and innovation. The rigorous vetting process ensures refugees integrate smoothly, enriching local areas.

For 2025, refugee admissions will be allocated by region, with Africa receiving up to 50,000, Latin America up to 50,000, and other regions like East Asia and Europe also receiving allocations.

This move reaffirms the U.S.’s commitment to supporting vulnerable populations amid rising global displacement levels. The increase in refugee numbers reflects ongoing efforts to rebuild the U.S.

Refugee Admissions Programme and maintain America’s leadership in humanitarian aid.
