Oil companies owe govt over $6bn – NEITI

In Nigeria, oil companies owe a lot of money to the government—about $6.175 billion! This money is for things like taxes and fees they haven’t paid.

Over the years, the government has spent a huge amount of money, around N15.87 trillion, to help people buy petrol (that’s a type of fuel for cars and generators). They had to spend this money because the price of petrol was higher than what people could afford, so the government helped out by paying the difference.

In 2022, the government paid the most for petrol help, around N4.71 trillion! Last year, the government imported more petrol than any other year, with 23.54 billion liters coming into Nigeria. This year, they bought less petrol, but they still spent N3.01 trillion helping people pay for it. This is because prices went up and down a lot.

Some important leaders in Nigeria, like the Chairman of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, are promising to get the money that is owed back for the country. They want to make sure everyone pays what they should. The government is also looking for better ways to manage oil and gas resources so that people can have fuel without the prices being too high!
