The Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) has called on the federal government to immediately reverse the recent increase in the price of Premium Motor Spirit (PMS).
NLC President Joe Ajaero voiced concerns over speculations that the Nigeria National Petroleum Company Limited (NNPCL) has authorized a hike in petrol prices.
The Union has made a five-point demand, including the release of detained protesters and a halt to indiscriminate arrests, warning that if their demands are not met, they will take further action.
The NLC also expressed its disappointment in the federal government’s actions, accusing it of betraying agreements made during the negotiation of the new minimum wage.
The Union highlighted the hardship caused by rising fuel prices and electricity tariffs, and criticized the government’s policies as contributing to hunger and insecurity in the country.
The NLC emphasized that they will continue to stand with the people and resist any attempts by the government to stifle dissent.
In response to the government’s recent actions, the NLC pledged to meet with its various organs to decide on the next steps.
The Union remains committed to protecting the rights of Nigerians and ensuring that the government does not criminalize protests or restrict basic freedoms.
The NLC has warned that the fuel price hike may be just the beginning of more harmful policies from the government.
